What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard CSV file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| UTF-8 CSV with a header row | Converts well | First row becomes keys, every data row becomes an object in the array. |
| UTF-8 CSV with a BOM | Converts well | The BOM is stripped automatically; conversion proceeds unchanged. |
| GBK or other non-UTF-8 encodings | Not supported | Rejected with a clear error — re-save as UTF-8 first. |
| CSV without a header row | Partial | The first data row is consumed as keys, by convention — add a header to keep your data. |
| Quoted values containing commas | Converts well | Handled per the CSV standard; they arrive as single values. |
From rows to objects
CSV and JSON answer different questions about the same data. CSV is a grid: rows of equal width, meaning carried by column position. JSON is a tree of labelled values, and the shape programs actually consume — feeds, configs, API payloads, NoSQL imports. Converting between them is therefore not a cosmetic change but a change of world model, and this converter performs it under one clear convention, stated below.
The output is the shape you would hand to code: a JSON array, with one object per data row. Each object carries the same set of keys, taken from the file's first row, so the whole file round-trips in your head as: header becomes keys, every other row becomes one object.
The structural convention
The first row is always treated as the header. Whatever sits in row 1 becomes the field names of every object in the output — there is no option to skip it, no guessing, no "smart detection". A file without a header row will therefore spend its first data row on becoming keys; if your CSV has no header, add one before converting.
Every value arrives as a string. This is not laziness but honesty: CSV carries no type information, so nothing in the file distinguishes the number 27 from the string "27", and the converter refuses to guess. If your code needs real numbers, parse them on the other side — a loop of `Number(row.age)` beats a silently mangled column.
Quoted values are respected: a field wrapped in double quotes that contains commas survives as one value, per the CSV standard.
Encoding: the one hard requirement
Files must be UTF-8. UTF-8 files with a BOM are handled — the marker is stripped and the conversion proceeds. But files in other encodings, GBK being the everyday example, are rejected with a clear error rather than garbled through. That is deliberate: silently mis-decoding text is worse than refusing it. If your file is not UTF-8, re-save it as UTF-8 in your editor first — then it goes straight through.
Wiring the output into your code
The output shape is deliberately the most boring possible JSON: an array of flat objects with string values. That flatness is a feature — any language loads it without ceremony, and every consumer can decide locally what to coerce. In JavaScript, `JSON.parse` then a `map` over the array covers most needs; the string values parse into numbers on the spot where your logic wants them.
If you need nesting, build it downstream: group the array by a key, merge rows that belong together, attach children to parents. Those are transformations over stable raw material, which is exactly what you want from a converter. What you do not get is the converter making those structural bets for you silently — a design choice that favors predictability over convenience, on purpose.
A note on scale: because the output is one array with one object per row, a CSV with a hundred thousand rows becomes a large JSON file, and that is exactly as it should be — the format mirrors the data. Consumers that stream or query will handle big arrays fine; consumers that load the whole file into memory should know what they are holding. The converter does not trim, sample or summarize to keep the file small: every row goes in, every row comes out.
Privacy and retention
Like everything on this site: one file, free, no account required, no watermark. Transport is encrypted, processing happens on the conversion cluster, and both your original CSV and the generated JSON are deleted automatically within 24 hours. What remains is the file you downloaded.

Frequently asked
Is CSV to JSON conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Why are my numbers strings like "27"?
Because CSV carries no type information: nothing in the file says whether 27 is a number or text, so the converter outputs it as a string instead of guessing. Parse to numbers on your side where you need them.
What about GBK-encoded CSV files?
They are rejected with a clear error — this converter takes UTF-8 only. Re-save the file as UTF-8 in your editor first; then it converts normally.
My CSV has no header row — what happens?
The first data row will be consumed as the field names, because the first row is always the header here. Add a header row before converting so no data is lost to keys.
Does a BOM cause problems?
No — UTF-8 files that start with a BOM are stripped of the marker and converted as usual.
How long does the conversion take?
Usually within a few minutes; a job like this can take up to about 10 minutes.
