03 · Background

WAV keeps everything, MP3 keeps what you hear

WAV stores audio as raw PCM: for every sample of every channel, the exact numeric value the microphone captured. A stereo song at CD quality consumes about 10 MB per minute; a field recording at 96 kHz consumes more. That purity matters for editing and archiving — no generation of your recording is ever compromised — but it is a terrible fit for sending, storing libraries or playing on devices with modest storage.

MP3 removes what psychoacoustics says you cannot hear: masked frequencies, redundant stereo information, inaudible detail. The result at a high bitrate is a file roughly a tenth the size that listener studies repeatedly find indistinguishable from the source for normal playback — which is why MP3, invented in the 1990s, still runs the world's podcasts and playlists.

How the encoding runs

The converter decodes your WAV and feeds a high-quality MP3 encoder. Sample rates above 48 kHz are resampled to the MP3 standard range, 24-bit depth is dithered down to the format's 16-bit domain, and channels map naturally — stereo stays stereo, mono stays mono. The encoder runs at a generous bitrate where artifacts like swishing cymbals or metallic vocals, the classic tells of low-bitrate MP3, do not appear.

Metadata travels across: ID3 tags (title, artist, album art references where present in the WAV's INFO chunks) are written into the MP3 so it does not land in your library as 'Unknown artist'.

The conversion is fast — audio is small work compared to video — with a ten-minute WAV finishing in seconds on the cluster.

When to keep the WAV

Keep the original for anything downstream that edits audio again: every re-encode of a lossy file compounds its losses, so MP3 is a delivery copy, not a master. Musicians archiving sessions, podcasters keeping stems and sound designers working with samples should treat the WAV as the permanent record and convert disposable copies for distribution.

For voice memos and meeting recordings, one practical note: speech encodes beautifully, and if you are feeding audio into transcription services, high-quality MP3 is accepted nearly everywhere the raw WAV is not.

Deletion and privacy

Both files are deleted automatically within 24 hours. Uploads move over HTTPS, encoding happens in memory on the conversion cluster, and the site runs no third-party ad networks. No account required, no email — a converter should not be a data collection exercise.

04 · FAQ

Frequently asked

Is WAV to MP3 conversion really free?

Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.

Are my files safe?

Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.

How long does a conversion take?

Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.

Will I hear the difference?

At the bitrate used here, no — quality is transparent for normal listening. Keep the WAV as a master for further editing.

How much smaller is the MP3?

Roughly 10× at CD quality: a 50 MB WAV typically lands near 5 MB.

Are ID3 tags preserved?

Standard metadata carries over; broadcast-specific BWF chunks do not.

Can I convert MP3 back to WAV?

Not here — and it would not restore quality. This tool converts one direction.
