What CAJ is and why it is annoying
CAJ is the proprietary reader format of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the country's dominant academic database. Universities hand out papers and theses in CAJ because the format ties into CNKI's licensing system, but the trade-off is that you must install CNKI's own CAJViewer to open the files — on every device, forever, including the machine at the print shop that probably doesn't have it.
PDF, by contrast, opens in every browser, phone, reference manager and printer on earth. Converting CAJ to PDF is therefore less about changing formats and more about escaping a vendor lock-in: the content is identical, the accessibility is not.
How the conversion works
LiteConvert routes CAJ files through a dedicated conversion chain tuned for the format's internal page description. The engine parses the document's page objects, renders text and embedded figures, and writes a standard PDF that preserves the article's pagination — important for academic use, where page numbers are cited.
Journal papers convert in seconds. Multi-hundred-page dissertations are the heavy case: they can take a minute or more and produce large PDFs, and progress is shown while the engine works. If a file is truncated (a partial download) or encrypted by the publisher, the conversion fails with a clear reason rather than a silently broken PDF — we would rather tell the truth than hand you garbage.
This tool is deliberately a single, well-made page. It exists to solve the one job well — CAJ in, PDF out — without pretending to be a whole CAJ processing suite.
Boundaries we keep
We do not touch DRM. Files that CNKI has protected with usage restrictions are refused regardless of technical feasibility; circumvention is against our policy everywhere on this platform, and CAJ is no exception. What we convert is what you are legitimately able to open.
We also do not do batch discovery or CAJ keyword harvesting — no exporting paper databases, no bulk scraping tools. One file, one PDF, done.
