From desktop documents to plain text workflows
Word documents live in desktop and enterprise worlds: rich styles, revision history, comments, and a binary-ish XML container that plain-text tools cannot read. Markdown lives everywhere else — Git repositories, static site generators, documentation platforms, and increasingly the prompts and knowledge bases of AI systems. Converting Word to Markdown is how a document crosses that boundary without copy-paste mangling.
The conversion is a semantic mapping, not a screenshot. A paragraph styled Heading 2 becomes ##, bold runs become **bold**, numbered lists become 1. 2. 3., tables become pipe tables, and hyperlinks become [text](url). What you get reads the same to a human and, crucially, reads perfectly to a machine.
How styles become syntax
The engine walks the .docx XML tree in document order and translates each element by its style, not by its appearance. That distinction matters: two paragraphs may look identical in Word, but if one uses the Heading 1 style and the other just uses large bold text, the first becomes # and the second stays ordinary text. Using real styles in Word before converting always produces better Markdown.
Tables with merged cells degrade gracefully to pipe tables, which have no spanning concept — complex merges flatten with the text intact. Footnotes, headers and footers are omitted from the body; they are page furniture that has no meaning in flowable text.
The output is deterministic: the same file always produces the same Markdown, which makes the tool usable in automated document pipelines rather than only as a one-off converter.
Where manual touch-ups help
Documents built from floating text boxes — flyer-style layouts — linearise imperfectly: all the text survives but the visual arrangement is gone, because Markdown has no absolute positioning. Brochures and posters are better served by PDF outputs than Markdown.
Review markup is intentionally stripped. If tracked changes and comments matter to you, accept or reject them in Word first; converting mid-review would otherwise bake half-considered edits into your plain text forever.
