03 · Background

The open format's last mile

ODT — OpenDocument Text — is the ISO-standard document format of the open office world: the native format of LibreOffice Writer, and the default choice for governments, universities and companies that decided their documents should outlive any single vendor. If you hold an ODT, you have already made the right long-term bet. PDF is what completes that journey: the open workflow's final form, readable and printable everywhere without asking the recipient to install anything or honor your formatting.

The need shows up at predictable points. A grant application that the portal accepts only as PDF. A thesis that the repository requires in its printed shape. A contract whose formatting must not shift by a comma when the other side opens it. ODT is where the document lives and gets edited; PDF is the shape it takes when it leaves your hands. The last mile of an open workflow runs through a converter.

There is a second, quieter reason. Not everyone you send documents to runs LibreOffice, and opening an ODT in an office suite that treats it as a guest is how reflowed layouts and substituted fonts get born. Freezing the document into PDF removes the guest treatment from the equation entirely.

Rendered where ODT feels at home

The conversion runs your file through a full office engine — the same class of software ODT lives in day to day. ODT is not a legacy visitor here that must be translated before it can be understood; the engine reads its styles, page layouts, tables and fields natively, and that shows in the output. Paragraph and character styles land as authored. Tables keep their widths, borders and merged cells. Footnotes sit at the bottoms of pages, headers and footers carry their page numbers, and a table of contents arrives with the page numbers it had when the document was rendered.

The output is a genuine PDF, not a picture of one: text stays selectable, searchable and copy-pastable, and fonts are embedded so the pages look the same on machines that never had your typefaces installed. It is also deterministic — the same ODT always produces the same PDF — which is exactly what filings and submissions want.

On timing: a conversion of this kind usually finishes within a few minutes, and the platform's ceiling for any job is about 10 minutes. Typical ODT files are done well under that, and progress is shown on the page while the engine works.

What changes when the pages freeze

Freezing is the job, so it is worth saying what freezing means. The PDF is the printed document: margin comments and tracked-changes markup are not part of it — accept or clean your changes in the ODT first if they should be visible. Interactive form fields settle into their current visual state. And a table of contents stops being a live field; it prints with the numbers it computed at conversion time, which is one more reason to update the index in the ODT before converting.

Fonts deserve their own honest line. Fonts the engine has available are embedded into the PDF. A document set in an unusual typeface the engine does not have will render with a close substitute — embed the fonts in your ODT, if your editor supports it, when exact letterforms matter to the output. And as everywhere on the platform: a password-protected ODT is refused rather than half-converted, and a file that is not really ODT fails with a clear reason instead of a silently broken PDF.

Privacy and retention

One file in, one PDF out — free, no account required, no watermark. Transport is HTTPS, processing happens on the conversion cluster, and both the original ODT and the produced PDF are deleted automatically within 24 hours. Nothing is shared with advertisers, there is no email field anywhere in the flow, and no account is requested at any point. What stays is the document you downloaded.

04 · FAQ

Frequently asked

Is ODT to PDF conversion really free?

Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.

Are my files safe?

Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.

How long does a conversion take?

Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.

Will it match what my office suite's print preview shows?

Yes — the file is rendered by the same class of engine that ODT lives in, so the output follows the styles and page layout as authored.

Do comments and tracked changes appear in the PDF?

No — the PDF is the printed document. Accept or clean up changes in the ODT first if they should be part of the result.

Are fonts embedded in the PDF?

Fonts the engine has are embedded; an unusual typeface may be substituted. Embed fonts in the ODT first when exact letterforms matter.

How long does the conversion take?

It usually finishes within a few minutes; the platform ceiling for any job is about 10 minutes.

How big can my ODT file be?

Up to 200 MB — generous beyond anything a text document typically needs.
