03 · Background

A comic archive is a folder pretending to be a file

A CBZ file is nothing more exotic than a ZIP archive of page images with a different extension — which is exactly why it is beloved by comic scanners, manga readers and digital hoarders: every image is a page, the order is just the filenames, and any archive tool can open it. What a CBZ is not is a document. No reader will print it cleanly, casual recipients may not know what to do with it, and e-readers that handle PDFs gracefully often shrug at comic archives.

Converting CBZ to PDF gives the stack of images what it is missing: a single, universal document. One file that opens on any phone, tablet, laptop and e-reader; that attaches to an email without explanation; that prints page for page; that can be annotated in any PDF tool. For reading a series on a commute, sharing a chapter with a friend, or putting a rarity onto paper, PDF is the shape the archive wants to become.

How the pages become a PDF

The conversion is direct: each image in the archive becomes one page of the PDF, in filename order, so chapter structure survives as long as your filenames do. Page size follows the images themselves — double-page spreads stay double-page, phone-scanned pages stay their own size — and the images are embedded at their original quality, with no recompression layer added on top.

The result reads like the comic, not like a print edition: turn pages, zoom a panel, flip back. Nothing is analyzed, cropped or re-laid-out; the archive goes in as pictures and the PDF comes out as pictures.

The honest limits

The biggest one is stated plainly: the PDF has no text layer. Comic pages are pictures, so the result is not searchable, and screen readers will not find dialogue in it — it is a visual edition, by nature and by design. Image quality is bounded by the archive: a low-resolution source stays low-resolution, and heavily compressed JPEG pages keep their artifacts.

Two more practical notes. The pages appear in filename order, so a comic whose pages are named 1, 2, … 10 will shuffle 10 right after 1 — renaming with zero-padding (01, 02 …) before uploading fixes that. And only CBZ is supported: the RAR-based CBR sibling is a different archive format and is refused.

Preparing an archive so the pages land in order

Because page order is filename order, a minute of preparation shapes the whole result. Unpack the archive, look at how the pages are named, and fix the two usual culprits before repacking: numbering without leading zeros, and prefixes that sort badly. Pages called 1, 2 … 12 become 01, 02 … 12, and the PDF comes out in reading order instead of lexicographic surprise.

The same pass is a good moment to drop stray files — covers, bookmarks, desktop clutter — that some archives carry along, since anything with an image extension risks becoming a page. None of this is required: an unprepared archive still converts, every image intact. It is the difference between a PDF that is correct and a PDF that is pleasant to turn pages in.

A note on what the PDF is not, since the question comes up: it is not a re-export of the original images in a cleverer wrapper. The PDF genuinely re-frames each picture as a page, which is what makes it printable and page-navigable in ordinary readers. If you later need the bare images back, the archive remains the source of truth — keep it the way you would keep a negative after printing.

04 · FAQ

Frequently asked

Is CBZ to PDF conversion really free?

Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.

Are my files safe?

Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.

How long does a conversion take?

Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.

Which order do the pages appear in?

Filename order inside the archive. Name pages with zero-padding (01, 02 …) before uploading so that page 10 does not land right after page 1.

Will the text in the comic be searchable?

No — the pages are images, so the PDF carries no text layer. It is a visual edition: readable everywhere, but not searchable.

Can I convert a CBR file?

No — CBR is a RAR-based archive, a different format. Only ZIP-based CBZ files are accepted; repackaging a CBR as CBZ is outside what this tool does.

What page size will the PDF have?

Each page follows its source image, so double-page spreads stay double-page and mixed sources give mixed page sizes.

How long does the conversion take?

Usually within a few minutes; like any job on the platform it can take up to about 15 minutes for a thick volume.
