03 · Background

The format Kindle grew into — and grew out of

AZW3, also known as KF8, is the format the Kindle platform moved to in 2011 when MOBI ran out of room. It brought proper typography to Kindle books: real heading styles, embedded fonts, tables that behave. Most books that came off the Kindle store in the last decade are AZW3 under the hood, and files produced by modern conversion tools default to it too.

The turn of the story is that Amazon's own ecosystem later opened to EPUB — Send-to-Kindle accepts it, and the wider e-book world never stopped speaking it. So AZW3 now sits in an awkward middle: rich enough to hold a serious book, but locked out of Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and every library-lending pipeline. Converting AZW3 to EPUB is how a book gets its passport back.

What the conversion carries over

Because AZW3's structure maps cleanly onto EPUB's, this conversion keeps more than a MOBI migration does. Text arrives intact and reflowable; heading structure becomes a working table of contents; embedded fonts and images carry over; and the metadata — title, author, series, cover — moves into the EPUB's own fields so the book shelves correctly.

The richer typography is the point of the format, and it largely survives: italics, small caps, tables and footnote formatting that a plain MOBI would have flattened come through in recognizable shape. Text remains real text throughout — selectable, searchable, resizable.

The DRM wall, and the honest quirks

The wall first: AZW3 files bought from the Kindle store are almost always DRM-locked, and locked files cannot be converted. Removing DRM is not something this tool does or offers anywhere. What converts cleanly are DRM-free files: personal documents, books exported from conversion tools, purchases from stores that sell without protection, Project Gutenberg-style downloads saved as AZW3.

Then the quirks, honestly: fixed-layout AZW3 files — children's picture books, comics — re-flow into a standard reading layout rather than keeping their per-page design. And region-restricted or bundled extras (audiobook links, X-Ray data) have no EPUB equivalent and are dropped.

Bulk moves and what to expect

If you are moving more than a book or two, a little triage up front saves the most time. Sort your AZW3 files into DRM-free and store-bought first — the second group will be refused no matter what, so finding out early beats finding out late. Personal documents and tool exports move straight through; everything else was never convertible in the first place.

Expect the conversion itself to be boring, which is the compliment. The format pair is mature and the mapping is well-trodden: what varies between books is mostly the metadata quality of the source, not the conversion. A book whose title and author were set properly arrives on a shelf looking right; a file named "document_2 (3)" will arrive exactly as anonymous as it left. Cleaning the source metadata before converting is worth the two minutes it takes.

Where do these files come from, in practice? Three sources account for most of them: books saved by older versions of Kindle's own tools, files produced by desktop e-book managers with their output set to AZW3, and downloads from stores that adopted the format for a while. The first two convert happily; the third depends entirely on the store's DRM choices at the time of purchase. A file that opens in a desktop e-book manager without complaint is usually a good sign; a file that demands an account first usually is not.

04 · FAQ

Frequently asked

Is AZW3 to EPUB conversion really free?

Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.

Are my files safe?

Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.

How long does a conversion take?

Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.

What is AZW3, compared to MOBI?

AZW3 (KF8) is the newer Kindle format from 2011 onwards, with real heading styles, embedded fonts and better tables. It converts to EPUB more cleanly than old MOBI files.

Can I convert DRM-locked Kindle store purchases?

No — DRM removal is not offered, and locked files are refused. Personal documents and DRM-free AZW3 files convert without any fuss.

Does the typography survive?

Largely yes — heading styles, italics, tables and embedded fonts are AZW3 strengths, and they map cleanly onto EPUB.

Do the cover and metadata move over?

Yes — title, author, series and cover image land in the EPUB metadata, so the book shelves correctly in any reading app.

How long does the conversion take?

Usually within a few minutes; like any job on the platform it can take up to about 15 minutes for a large book.
