What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MOBI file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| DRM-free MOBI books and personal documents | Converts well | Text, chapters, images and metadata migrate into a standard EPUB. |
| DRM-locked store purchases | Not supported | DRM removal is not offered; locked files are refused. |
| Cover, title, author and series metadata | Converts well | Moves into the EPUB metadata so the book shelves correctly. |
| Highlights, bookmarks and reading position | Not supported | They live in the app or account, not in the file, and cannot travel. |
| Formatting depending on old Kindle quirks | Partial | Rare constructs may simplify; the body text is unaffected. |
Why leave MOBI behind
MOBI is a format with a long history and a shrinking audience. It was the native format of early Kindle devices and remained the format Kindle's personal-document service accepted for years — which is why so many private libraries still have folders full of .mobi files. But the ecosystem has moved on: newer readers and reading apps increasingly refuse it, and the format's own feature set froze years ago.
EPUB is the format the rest of the world agreed on. It is what Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Calibre's reader and virtually every phone reading app open by default, and it is the format public libraries lend. Converting your MOBI library to EPUB is the standard move when you switch devices, consolidate apps, or simply want books that will still open in ten years.
What the conversion carries over
The conversion is a true format migration, not an export of approximations. Your book's text arrives intact and reflowable, chapter structure becomes a navigable table of contents, and the metadata — title, author, series, cover image — travels into the EPUB's own metadata so the book looks right on a shelf. Embedded images stay embedded where the layout places them.
Because EPUB is the richer format, nothing is being squeezed: an EPUB can express everything a MOBI file could, and usually a little more. Text stays real text — selectable, searchable, resizable — rather than becoming page images.
The honest limits
The absolute one first: DRM-protected store purchases cannot be converted. Kindle books bought from the store are locked, and removing that protection is not something this tool does or offers anywhere. What converts cleanly are DRM-free files — personal documents you sent to Kindle yourself, free classics, books exported from writing tools, purchases from stores that sell DRM-free.
Beyond that, the losses are small but real. Reading-position bookmarks and highlights live in your account or device, not in the file, so they do not travel. Whispersync-style synchronization obviously does not either. And exotic formatting that depended on old Kindle quirks may simplify — rare, but honest to mention.
Migrating a whole library, practically
One book at a time is how this page works, and that suits the way MOBI collections actually behave: a handful of files you care about, a long tail you are keeping out of inertia. Moving the treasured dozen through a converter and leaving the rest until they matter is a perfectly sound strategy — the files do not expire while they wait.
Two practical notes for the move. First, keep the MOBI originals until you have opened each EPUB and confirmed it looks right on the device you actually read on; format migrations deserve a spot check, not faith. Second, if a book came from a store, check whether that store can simply re-download it as EPUB — several now can, and a fresh download beats any conversion. What remains after both of those is the true conversion territory: personal documents, self-made files and everything the stores never sold you.
Third, mind the siblings. A PRC file is MOBI's near-twin, and an AZW file is often the same content under another name; if your library holds those, this site has a dedicated page for the AZW3 branch, and the same expectations about DRM and metadata apply there. Renaming an extension is never the move — a file's format is what its bytes say, not what its name says.
Privacy and retention
The conversion runs like everything else here: one file, free, no account required, no watermark. Transport is encrypted, processing happens on the conversion cluster, and both your original MOBI and the generated EPUB are deleted automatically within 24 hours. The only copy left afterwards is the one you downloaded.

Frequently asked
Is MOBI to EPUB conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will my highlights and bookmarks carry over?
No — those live in your reading app or account, not in the MOBI file itself, so they cannot travel with the conversion.
Can I convert DRM-protected Kindle purchases?
No — DRM removal is not offered, and locked store books are refused. Personal documents and DRM-free files convert without any fuss.
Do the cover and metadata survive?
Yes — title, author, series and cover image move into the EPUB's own metadata, so the book shows up correctly on a shelf.
Will the EPUB work on my Kobo or phone?
Yes — EPUB is the format Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and most phone reading apps open by default.
How long does the conversion take?
Usually within a few minutes; like any job on the platform it can take up to about 15 minutes for a large book.
