What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MKV file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| Standard MKV files (H.264/AAC inside) | Converts well | Streams map straight into a widely compatible MP4. |
| HEVC video or FLAC/Vorbis audio inside | Converts well | Re-encoded at high quality to the codecs MP4 players expect. |
| Multi-track MKV with styled subtitles | Partial | Extra tracks may not surface in every player; styled subs can be simplified. |
| DRM-protected store purchases | Not supported | Protected files are refused — we do not strip copy protection. |
The container that accepts everything, the container that plays everywhere
MKV — short for Matroska — is the most permissive container in mainstream use. An MKV file can hold almost any combination of video and audio codecs, multiple subtitle tracks, several audio languages and chapter markers, all in one file. That flexibility is why it dominates file-sharing communities, anime releases, HD captures of television and hobbyist archives: when a file has to carry a lot, MKV carries it.
New MKV files keep appearing for practical reasons, too. OBS Studio records to MKV by default because the container survives a crash mid-recording, so a whole generation of streamers and meeting-recordists sits on MKV archives without ever having chosen the format. Device rips, downloaded lecture series and media-server libraries round out the picture.
The catch is that players treat MKV like a foreign passport. Smart TVs, iPhones, many video editors and most social platforms either refuse it outright or support it partially. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the opposite: the closest thing video has to a universal dialect, accepted by every phone, browser, console, smart TV and editor. Converting MKV to MP4 keeps your video's content and changes its citizenship.
What carries over cleanly
Much depends on what sits inside your MKV. A large share of MKV files — including most downloaded media and many screen recordings — already hold H.264 video with AAC audio. For those, the trip to MP4 is short: the same streams are placed into an MP4 shell, and the result behaves identically while playing far more widely. Nothing about the picture or the sound is recomputed, so there is nothing to degrade.
When the MKV holds something MP4 players do not expect — HEVC video, FLAC or Vorbis audio, or subtitle formats with heavy styling — the engine converts those streams into MP4's standard dialect at high quality. Video resolution and frame rate are preserved; a 1080p MKV arrives as a 1080p MP4. Heavily styled subtitles are the honest casualty: MP4's subtitle support is real but plainer than what Matroska allows.
Multi-track files, size and honest limits
MKV files with several audio tracks (a commentary, a second language) or embedded subtitles are where expectations deserve calibrating. MP4 can store multiple audio tracks, but many players only surface the first one, and stylized subtitle tracks may be simplified rather than mis-rendered. If your file leans on its extras, spot-check the output before batch-converting an archive.
There is no watermark and no forced downsizing: quality follows the source. The practical limit is 200 MB per file, which covers most single episodes and clips. Conversion usually finishes within a few minutes; larger files can take up to about 15 minutes at worst, with progress shown while the engine works. And the standard caution: files bought from stores with DRM protection are refused — this tool converts your footage, not protected purchases.
One more habit worth adopting for large libraries: convert one representative file first, check it on the devices you actually own, and only then batch the rest. Two minutes of verification beats an evening of re-converting a shelf of episodes that a picky TV refuses for a reason no list can predict.
Privacy and deletion
Uploads travel over HTTPS, conversion runs on the conversion cluster, and both the original MKV and the finished MP4 are deleted automatically within 24 hours. An account is optional — handy only if you want longer history across devices — and there is no watermark and no third-party ad network on the site.

Frequently asked
Is MKV to MP4 conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will converting MKV to MP4 lose quality?
Quality follows your source. Common H.264/AAC streams carry straight over, other codecs re-encode at high quality, and resolution and frame rate are preserved.
What happens to subtitle tracks inside the MKV?
Plain text subtitles usually carry over; heavily styled formats may be simplified, because MP4's subtitle support is plainer than MKV's.
Why do my TV and phone refuse to play MKV files?
MKV support is optional for device makers, so it is patchy. MP4 is effectively mandatory, which is exactly why converting helps.
How long does an MKV to MP4 conversion take?
Usually a few minutes. Larger files can take up to about 15 minutes at worst, and progress is shown while the engine works.
How big can my MKV file be?
Up to 200 MB per file — room for a full episode or a long clip.
