What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MOV file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| iPhone / camera MOV (H.264 or HEVC) | Converts well | Video and audio tracks are remapped to a compatible MP4. |
| Already-H.264 MOV files | Converts well | The stream is repackaged, not re-encoded — no quality loss at all. |
| ProRes / professional codecs | Partial | Re-encoded to H.264; editing-grade quality needs the original. |
| DRM-protected videos | Not supported | Protected store purchases are refused — we do not strip DRM. |
MOV and MP4: siblings with different passports
MOV and MP4 share a family tree — both use the same container design from Apple's QuickTime heritage, and both hold video and audio tracks described the same way. The practical difference is acceptance: MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the closest thing the video world has to a universal dialect, playing on every phone, browser, smart TV and video editor. MOV plays natively mainly in the Apple ecosystem and in professional tools.
Converting MOV to MP4 is therefore less about translation and more about repatriation: your video's content stays the same, but it gains the widest possible audience.
When conversion costs nothing at all
Here is the detail most converters skip: if your MOV already contains an H.264 video track — common for iPhone footage set to 'Most Compatible' and many cameras — the conversion is a container change. The compressed video bytes are copied as-is into an MP4 shell. There is no re-encoding step, which means zero quality loss and conversion that finishes in seconds rather than minutes.
When the source uses HEVC or ProRes, a real re-encode is unavoidable: MP4's universal profile is H.264, so the engine transcodes to it at high quality. You get a file that plays anywhere, at the cost of a generation of compression and some minutes of processing for longer clips. Progress is shown throughout.
Quality, size and honest limits
Re-encoding quality follows the source's resolution and frame rate — no resolution caps, no watermarks. A 4K HEVC MOV re-encodes as 4K H.264; expect the file to grow, because H.264's efficiency is a decade behind HEVC's. If size matters more than universal playback, keeping HEVC inside MP4 is an option this tool does not force; the goal here is maximum compatibility.
DRM-protected purchases from streaming stores are refused outright, as are files whose licenses forbid conversion. And a caution that saves disappointment: a video renamed from .mov to .mp4 by hand is not converted — it is the same bytes with a new label, and plenty of players will still choke on it. Actual repackaging is what this tool does.
Video privacy and deletion
Video is the most intimate file type people convert, so handling is strict: HTTPS transport, processing on the conversion cluster, and automatic deletion of both files within 24 hours. An account is optional: there is no analytics on your content, and no third-party ad network on the site.

Frequently asked
Is MOV to MP4 conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will I lose quality?
If your MOV is already H.264, no — it is repackaged losslessly. HEVC/ProRes sources are re-encoded at high quality to H.264.
How long does it take?
A pure repackage finishes in seconds; a re-encode scales with the clip's length, and you will see progress while it runs.
Why is my MP4 bigger than the MOV?
HEVC compresses better than H.264. The MP4 trades size for playing everywhere.
Can I convert DRM-protected MOV files?
No — protected files are refused. We do not circumvent copy protection.
Is there a size limit?
200 MB per file. Short and medium clips fit comfortably.
