What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MP4 file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| Short screen recordings and clips | Converts well | The classic use case: a few seconds of motion for docs and chat. |
| Full-length videos | Partial | GIF is size-inefficient — minutes-long input produces enormous GIFs. |
| Clips with audio | Partial | GIF has no sound; the video track converts, audio is dropped. |
| HDR / 10-bit sources | Converts well | Tone-mapped to standard 8-bit GIF color. |
Why GIF refuses to die
GIF is a 1987 format with 256 colors and no sound, and it remains the only animation format you can paste into a README, a pull request comment, a chat message, a slide deck and a blog post with near-total confidence. Modern alternatives (WebP, AVIF, short MP4 loops) are technically better everywhere — smaller, smoother, full-color — but nothing else has GIF's social acceptance.
Converting MP4 to GIF is therefore an act of translation into a deliberately ancient dialect, and the craft lies in choosing what to sacrifice: color fidelity, frame rate, resolution or file size.
How the conversion picks its battles
The pipeline samples the video's frames at a sensible rate, builds an optimal 256-color palette from the actual content (rather than a fixed web palette), and applies dithering where gradients need it. Flat-color screen recordings — the dominant use case — come out crisp, because UI colors fit a 256-color palette comfortably.
Duration is the lever that matters most. A five-second clip yields a GIF a chat app will happily display; a two-minute video yields a GIF the size of a small novel. Short clips produce results measured in megabytes; long ones in tens of megabytes, which is physics, not inefficiency. Audio has no place in the format and is dropped without ceremony.
Getting a good GIF
Trim before converting when you can: the best GIFs are one to ten seconds. High-contrast, slow-motion content converts beautifully; fast motion and busy gradients are where 256 colors show their age. If the result feels heavy, a smaller source resolution is the cheapest fix — GIF stores every frame in full, so pixels multiply quickly.
For documentation authors specifically: pair the GIF with the original MP4. GitHub renders both; the MP4 is smaller and smoother while the GIF survives in places video cannot.
Privacy and retention
Uploads travel over HTTPS, conversion runs on the cluster, and both the video and the GIF are deleted automatically within 24 hours. No account required, no email, no third-party ad networks — the model is a paid tier someday, never your content.

Frequently asked
Is MP4 to GIF conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Does the GIF have sound?
No — GIF cannot store audio. Extract audio separately with MP4 to MP3 if you need it.
Why is my GIF so large?
GIF stores every frame as a full image. Shorter clips and lower resolution shrink it dramatically.
What clip length works best?
One to ten seconds. Longer inputs convert fine but produce very heavy files.
Will colors look right?
A content-adaptive palette keeps UI screenshots crisp; rainbow gradients are where 256 colors show their age.
