What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard MP4 file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| Standard MP4 with AAC audio | Converts well | Audio is extracted and encoded to MP3 at high quality. |
| Videos with multiple audio tracks | Partial | The primary (first) audio track is used. |
| Silent videos | Not supported | No audio track means nothing to extract — the error says so plainly. |
| DRM-protected downloads | Not supported | Protected store content is refused; we do not strip DRM. |
The audio is already in there
An MP4 file is a container: a video track, an audio track, and metadata living side by side. When you want the audio — a lecture to listen on a walk, a podcast episode recorded as video, an interview for transcription — the task is not really conversion but extraction: pull the audio stream out of the container and hand it to you in a format music players and podcast apps universally accept.
MP3 is that universal format. AAC (the audio codec inside most MP4s) is technically more efficient, but MP3's compatibility thirty years on is unmatched: every car stereo, dictation app, transcription service and ancient gym playlist speaks it.
How extraction works
The engine demuxes the MP4 — separating the tracks without decoding the video at all — and pipes the audio into an MP3 encoder at a high bitrate. Skipping video decoding entirely is why audio extraction is dramatically faster than video conversion: a one-hour lecture extracts in a fraction of its runtime, and progress is visible while it works.
Quality follows the source. Dialogue and music from typical videos encode transparently at the bitrate used here; there is no artificial volume boost, no channel mixing beyond a sane downmix if the source is surround sound, and metadata like the file's title carries over where present.
Two honest edge cases: videos with several language tracks give you the first track, and a video with no audio at all fails immediately with a clear message rather than producing a zero-byte MP3.
Copyright, plainly
Extracting audio from files you have is a normal operation — archiving your own recordings, making a lecture listenable, preparing material for transcription. What this tool is not is a YouTube downloader or a DRM bypass: streams protected by rights management are refused, and we do not integrate with third-party platforms for pulling content. Bring your own file; we convert it.
Retention
Both the video and the extracted MP3 are deleted automatically within 24 hours. Uploads ride over HTTPS, processing happens on the conversion cluster, and the site runs no third-party ad networks. No account required — nothing you must sign into, nothing to leak.

Frequently asked
Is MP4 to MP3 extraction really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will the audio quality suffer?
No audible loss for typical sources: the audio is encoded to MP3 at high quality straight from the stream.
How fast is the extraction?
Fast — no picture re-rendering is involved, so it usually finishes well within the video's duration: seconds to tens of seconds.
Which audio track is used in multi-language videos?
The first track. Track selection is on the roadmap.
Can I extract audio from YouTube links?
No — bring your own file. We do not pull content from third-party platforms.
