What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard AVIF file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| Static AVIF images | Converts well | Decoded at full resolution with color profile applied, re-encoded as high-quality JPG. |
| Portals and older software that reject AVIF | Converts well | Output is a standard JPG accepted by virtually every form and editor. |
| Animated AVIF files | Partial | Produces a still image from the frames; animation cannot exist inside a JPG. |
| Corrupted or renamed files | Not supported | Real image content is required — a video renamed to .avif is detected and reported with a clear error. |
Why AVIF files get stuck
AVIF is the newest generation of image formats: built on the AV1 video codec, it compresses photographs more efficiently than JPG and even WebP, and the major platforms have been adopting it steadily. Images exported by current design tools and saved by newer devices increasingly arrive as .avif. On a modern system, that is pure upside. The trouble starts the moment the file meets software or hardware from before the format existed: older operating systems show a broken icon, some editors open it reluctantly or not at all, and plenty of upload forms — which tend to list JPG and little else — bounce it outright. None of this is a verdict against AVIF; every format lives through this phase, and JPG itself was once the newcomer nothing could open. It is simply what the word "modern" always turns out to mean: a moving boundary, with your newest files on one side and someone else's computer on the other.
That is the gap this conversion closes. JPG is three decades old, decoded by essentially everything, and listed as an accepted type by virtually every form on the internet. Converting AVIF to JPG is not a technical judgment — AVIF is, by most measures, the better engine — it is a pragmatic translation for the machines that have not caught up yet. The conversion takes the side of the recipient: translating one file is cheaper than arguing with a form.
What the conversion preserves
The conversion decodes the AV1-compressed image inside the AVIF container and re-encodes it as a high-quality JPG. Resolution is preserved exactly; the image's embedded color profile is read and applied during decoding, so colors land faithfully rather than shifted or washed out. The engine writes JPGs at a quality level where compression artifacts stay invisible for normal viewing and printing, and everything runs on cluster hardware, so even very large images convert without waiting on a phone's software decoder.
One honest label belongs here: JPG is a lossy format, so the re-encoding involves compression, and this page says so instead of hiding it. What the conversion preserves is what matters to a photograph — framing, resolution, faithful color. What it cannot carry across is anything the JPG format has no box for, such as transparency or animation; those cases are covered below. If the source image relies on see-through areas, the PNG route is the one that keeps them.
Size, animation and honest edges
Expect the file to grow. AVIF's compression is more efficient than JPG's, so an image weighing 200 KB as AVIF may land closer to 500 KB as JPG at the same visual quality — the compatibility tax, paid in kilobytes rather than in quality. And there is a second edge for animated AVIF files: a JPG holds exactly one frame, so animation necessarily reduces to a still image. For animations, an animated destination — GIF, WebP kept as-is, or MP4 — is the one that fits; for the still you actually needed, this conversion hands it over directly.
A practical rule of thumb ties it together: keep AVIF as your master wherever it works, and reach for this conversion when a specific destination rejects it. If your images live entirely in modern browsers, you may rarely need JPG at all. If you share into the wider offline world — old laptops, office software, kiosks, government portals — you will need it sooner than you think, and it should cost you nothing but the kilobytes.
Privacy and deletion
Uploads go over HTTPS, decoding happens in memory, and both the AVIF and the JPG are deleted automatically within 24 hours. No account required, no watermark on the output, no third-party ad networks — the site earns money later from a paid tier, not from your images. One file in, one file out, both forgotten.

Frequently asked
Is AVIF to JPG conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Why convert AVIF to JPG at all?
Compatibility. AVIF is technically excellent but young; older systems, editors and upload forms still only speak JPG.
Will quality suffer?
Not visibly. The JPG is written at high quality, so artifacts stay invisible in normal viewing and printing.
Is the resolution preserved?
Yes — pixel dimensions stay exactly the same.
Why is the JPG bigger than my AVIF?
AVIF's compression is more efficient than JPG's. The size increase is the price of being readable everywhere.
Can animated AVIF convert?
Only into a still image — a JPG holds one frame. Keep the animated original for anything that needs motion.
