What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard HEIC file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| iPhone / iPad HEIC photos | Converts well | Full resolution decoded from the HEVC container, color profile applied, written as lossless PNG. |
| Live Photos / Portrait depth maps | Partial | The still image converts at full fidelity; motion and depth layers have no PNG equivalent. |
| .heif images from other devices | Converts well | HEIF is HEIC's parent format and decodes through the same path. |
| Corrupted or renamed files | Not supported | Real image content is required — a .txt renamed to .heic fails with a clear error. |
A lossless destination for iPhone photos
Most HEIC conversions head straight to JPG, because JPG is the universal dialect of photos. But JPG is a lossy format: writing it means re-compressing your photo and discarding a little information, however small. PNG answers a different question. It is just as universally decoded — every browser, every operating system, every image editor of the last two decades reads it — but it is lossless: whatever pixels come out of the HEIC's HEVC decoder are written into the file exactly, and a PNG re-saved a hundred times never degrades.
That makes HEIC to PNG the right conversion when the photo is an asset rather than an attachment: images headed into an editing pipeline, graphics you will re-compress later, files a printer or a design tool explicitly requested in PNG, and anything you want to archive once without ever worrying about generational loss again. It also covers the unglamorous cases — upload forms that reject .heic but happily take .png, and older applications whose import dialogs predate Apple's format entirely.
What the conversion preserves
The conversion decodes the HEVC-compressed image inside the HEIC container and writes a true-color PNG. Resolution is preserved exactly — your 4032×3024 sensor pixels stay 4032×3024. Color handling is done properly: the display color profile embedded by the iPhone is read and applied during decoding, which is precisely the difference between correct skin tones and a washed-out result. Naive converters skip that step and it shows.
Lossless output also means predictable downstream behavior. Every future crop, resize, filter or format change starts from exactly the pixels the iPhone captured — there is no hidden first-generation compression damage baked into your starting point, and that matters more the longer an image lives inside a project.
The honest limits are the same as with any still-image target. A Live Photo is a still frame plus a short video, and the video part has no home in a PNG; depth maps captured by Portrait mode are auxiliary data, also dropped. What remains is the photograph itself, at full fidelity.
One detail worth knowing: the converter inspects content, not just filenames. A video renamed to .heic is detected and reported as such instead of failing with a cryptic error.
The size trade, honestly
PNG files made from photos are large, and that is physics rather than a flaw. HEVC inside HEIC compresses photographs roughly twice as efficiently as PNG's lossless method, and PNG has no quality dial to trade fidelity for size — it keeps everything or nothing.
In practice, a 1.5 MB iPhone HEIC may become a 4–6 MB PNG at identical pixels. That is the right trade when the file will be edited, archived, or fed to tools that demand PNG. If the goal is simply sharing or uploading where any image format is accepted, the JPG route produces a far smaller file — both tools live on this site, so pick by destination rather than by habit.
One workflow note: converting to PNG does not obligate you to abandon the HEIC original. Keep the HEIC as the camera master — it is the smallest full-quality copy of the photo you own — and treat the PNG as the working copy for tools that require it. That way you get PNG compatibility without paying HEIC's storage penalty across your whole library.
Privacy and deletion
Photos are personal. Uploads ride over HTTPS, decoding happens in memory, and both the HEIC and the PNG are deleted automatically within 24 hours. No account required, no watermark on the output, no third-party ad networks — the site earns money later from a paid tier, not from your photo library. Converting a photo here is a one-file errand, not a subscription: the tool asks for one HEIC, hands back one PNG, and forgets both.

Frequently asked
Is HEIC to PNG conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Does converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is a lossless format — the decoded pixels are written exactly, with no re-compression artifacts added.
Is the resolution preserved?
Yes — pixel dimensions stay exactly the same.
Why is the PNG bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC's HEVC compression is roughly twice as efficient as PNG's lossless method. You are trading file size for zero quality risk.
Can I convert Live Photos?
The still frame converts; the motion component cannot exist inside a PNG.
Should I convert HEIC to PNG or to JPG?
PNG for editing, archiving and PNG-only requirements; JPG for sharing, where its smaller size wins.
