What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard HEIC file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| iPhone / iPad HEIC photos | Converts well | Full resolution decoded from the HEVC container; color profile handled correctly. |
| HEIC with depth maps / Live Photos | Partial | The still image converts; motion and depth layers have no JPG equivalent. |
| .heif images from other devices | Converts well | HEIF is HEIC's parent format and decodes through the same path. |
| Corrupted or renamed files | Not supported | Real content is required — renaming a .txt to .heic fails with a clear error. |
Why your iPhone photos won't open anywhere
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) instead of JPG. The format is genuinely better: roughly half the file size at equal visual quality, plus support for 16-bit color, HDR gain maps and image sequences like Live Photos. But the ecosystem outside Apple adopted it slowly, so the moment a photo leaves the Apple world — a Windows laptop, a government portal, an older Android phone, many websites — it becomes a file nobody can open.
JPG is the universal dialect: three decades old, decoded by every device and browser ever made, accepted by every upload form. Converting HEIC to JPG trades some of that modern efficiency for total compatibility, which is usually the right trade the moment you need to share or upload a photo.
What converts and what doesn't
The conversion decodes the HEVC-compressed image inside the HEIC container and re-encodes it as a high-quality JPG. Resolution is preserved exactly — your 4032×3024 sensor pixels stay 4032×3024. Color handling matters more than people expect: iPhone photos carry display color profiles, and a naive converter produces washed-out or overly saturated results; the engine here reads and applies the profile during decoding.
HEIC's extra layers are where honest limits live. A Live Photo is a still plus a short video; the video part has no home in a JPG. Depth maps used by Portrait mode are auxiliary data, also dropped. What remains is the photograph itself, which is what most people actually need.
One real-format check worth mentioning: the converter inspects content, not just filenames. A video renamed to .heic will be detected and reported as such instead of failing with a cryptic error.
Quality: what you give up
JPG is lossy, so re-encoding always involves a quality choice. The engine writes high-quality JPGs where artifacts stay invisible for normal viewing and printing; if you plan heavy editing or archiving, keeping the original HEIC as your master and converting copies for sharing is the professional workflow.
File size grows in the conversion — that is expected, since JPG's compression is less efficient than HEVC's. A 1.5 MB HEIC may become a 3–4 MB JPG at the same visual quality.
Photo privacy
Photos are personal. Uploads go over HTTPS, decoding happens in memory, and both files are deleted automatically within 24 hours. No account required, no photo library retention, no third-party ad networks — the privacy page spells it out in two paragraphs, because it should take two paragraphs.

Frequently asked
Is HEIC to JPG conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will I lose photo quality?
Visibly, no. The JPG is written at high quality; only HEIC's extra layers (Live Photo motion, depth maps) are dropped.
Does the resolution change?
No — pixel dimensions stay exactly the same.
Why is my JPG bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC compresses about twice as efficiently. Same picture quality, larger file — that is the compatibility tax.
Can I convert Live Photos?
The still frame converts; the motion component cannot exist inside a JPG.
Can I convert JPG back to HEIC?
Not here — this tool is one-directional on purpose. HEIC writing is a niche need.
