What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PDF file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| pair.caseScanned | Not supported | Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so text extraction produces little or nothing — OCR is not offered yet, and we tell you when we detect one. |
| Text-based PDFs (reports, papers) | Converts well | Headings inferred from font sizes, lists and tables mapped to Markdown syntax. |
| Scanned PDFs | Not supported | No OCR yet — scanned pages have no text layer to extract, and we say so upfront. |
| Academic two-column papers | Partial | Text is complete; column merging can jumble reading order in dense layouts. |
| Encrypted PDFs | Not supported | Refused. Decrypt first, then convert. |
Why Markdown is the target format for text
Markdown is plain text with a handful of symbols for structure: # for headings, - for lists, pipes for tables. That simplicity is exactly why it has become the lingua franca of AI workflows, documentation systems and note apps — every language model reads it natively, every editor opens it without a plugin, and Git tracks changes to it line by line.
Converting a PDF to Markdown is therefore not about looks; it is about turning a page-image format back into structured, machine-usable text. Headings become hierarchy, paragraphs become clean prose, and tables become data you can grep, chunk and embed.
How extraction works here
The conversion pipeline extracts the PDF's text objects, then rebuilds semantics: font-size clusters become heading levels, bullet glyphs become list items, and grid-like glyph arrangements become Markdown tables. Reading order follows the document's internal structure where present, falling back to layout analysis when it isn't.
Images are noted where they appear in the flow so you can see where figures belonged. The output is a single .md file that opens anywhere — VS Code, Obsidian, Notion import, a terminal — and feeds cleanly into retrieval-augmented generation pipelines and prompt contexts.
Text-based documents — reports, specs, papers, manuals — get the best results. A typical ten-page report converts in seconds and lands as a few kilobytes of tidy text.
Honest limits
Scanned PDFs convert to almost nothing, because photographs of paper contain no extractable text until OCR runs. LiteConvert does not offer OCR yet; the file detector flags scanned inputs before you waste a conversion, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Two-column academic layouts are the hardest case: the visual order (left column, then right) can disagree with the PDF's internal object order, so dense papers may need light reordering after conversion. Footnotes and margin notes can end up inline — they are preserved, just not always in scholarly position.
Encrypted PDFs are refused outright. If your reader asks for a password, so would our engine; decrypt first and convert.
Privacy for documents you convert
Contracts and internal papers are common inputs here, so the privacy posture is strict: HTTPS in transit, processing in memory on the conversion cluster, and automatic deletion of both the original and the .md within 24 hours. No account required, no email capture, no third-party ad networks — and we never sell or share uploaded files.

Frequently asked
Is PDF to Markdown conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Is the Markdown good for RAG pipelines?
Yes — clean headings, lists and tables in one .md file; chunkers and embedders consume it directly.
Can it extract text from scans?
Not yet. We don't offer OCR; the detector warns you when a PDF looks scanned.
Do tables become Markdown tables?
Yes where the PDF draws them as grids; heavily stylized tables may need a quick manual pass.
Are images included?
Image positions are marked in the text flow; the .md itself stays pure text by design.
