What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PDF file | Converts well | This conversion runs as a 2-step pipeline — quality stays high, timing is a little longer than a direct conversion. |
| pair.caseScanned | Not supported | Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so text extraction produces little or nothing — OCR is not offered yet, and we tell you when we detect one. |
| Text-based PDFs (reports, papers, manuals) | Converts well | Text, headings, images and links become a reflowable e-book with a table of contents. |
| Scanned PDFs (page images, no text layer) | Not supported | Nothing to extract — the pre-check intercepts these before conversion and reports it clearly. |
| Multi-column and print-designed layouts | Partial | Layout is linearized into one reading flow; the print design is not preserved. |
| Password-protected or DRM-locked files | Not supported | Unlocking is not offered; protected files are refused. |
A document format becoming a book format
A PDF records what a page looks like: glyphs nailed to positions, columns frozen in place, a page count that never changes. That is perfect for printing and terrible for reading on a phone — every pinch-zoom, every sideways scroll is you fighting the page's fixed geometry. An EPUB is the other philosophy: the text flows to fit your screen, your font size, your night mode, which is why it is the format e-reader apps and devices actually want.
Converting PDF to EPUB is therefore a translation between two ways of thinking about a document, and it is worth knowing what it is for. It shines on text-driven PDFs — reports, papers, manuals, articles, e-books that were themselves exported to PDF — and turns them into something you can actually read on a six-inch screen on a train.
The two-stage pipeline, explained
The conversion runs as a two-stage pipeline. First the text layer is extracted from the PDF and structured as Markdown — headings recognized, paragraphs reassembled, lists and tables picked out. From that structured text the EPUB is generated: a proper e-book with a table of contents, reflowable chapters and embedded images carried over from the source.
Because two engines do the work instead of one, this direction is a little slower than a single-step conversion. Most files finish within a few minutes; a job like this can take up to about 11 minutes. For a report or an article it is usually quicker — the page shows progress while the pipeline works.
The honest limit: scanned PDFs cannot convert
This is the boundary to know before you upload: a scanned PDF — pages that are photographs, with no text layer underneath — cannot be converted. There is no text to extract, so there is nothing for the pipeline to build a book from. A pre-check runs before conversion and stops such files with a clear message, rather than handing you an empty or garbled e-book.
The same applies to PDFs that are locked with a password or protected by DRM. If your PDF does contain real, selectable text — you can test this by trying to select a sentence in any PDF viewer — it is a candidate. If selection does nothing and the page is really one big image, it is a scan, and this tool is not the one for it.
What the e-book keeps, and what it loses
What carries over: the text itself, the reading order, heading structure strong enough to build a table of contents from, embedded images, and hyperlinks. What does not: the page design. Multi-column layouts are linearized into a single flow, footnotes may land inline, and intricate print typography is replaced by the e-book's own. That is the trade you are making — fixed pages out, comfortable reading in. A few habits on the source side pay off on the destination side. PDFs whose headings are real, tagged headings convert into e-books with a working table of contents; PDFs whose headings are just big bold lines produce flatter books with everything at one level. Text that flows in a single logical order — one column of story — survives best; scans, forms and CAD drawings were never text at all and are out of scope from the start.
If your PDF is a print export of a document you still own in its original format, converting from that original is almost always better: the original carries the structure, while the PDF carries a picture of it. This tool is at its best when the PDF is all you have — the report someone emailed, the paper you downloaded, the manual that only exists as pages.
Privacy and retention
Like the rest of the site: one file, uploaded free, no account required, no watermark on the result. Transport is encrypted, processing happens on the conversion cluster, and both your original PDF and the generated EPUB are deleted automatically within 24 hours. What remains is only the e-book you downloaded.

Frequently asked
Is PDF to EPUB conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
No. A scanned PDF is a stack of page images with no extractable text layer, so there is nothing to build an e-book from. A pre-check detects this before conversion and stops the job with a clear message — only PDFs with real, selectable text are supported.
How do I know if my PDF has a text layer?
Open it in any PDF viewer and try to select a sentence. If the text highlights, it has a text layer and will convert; if selection does nothing, it is a scan.
Why does the EPUB look different from the PDF?
Because it is a different kind of file. The EPUB drops the page design — columns, print typography, page breaks — and keeps the text, reading order, headings, images and links so it can reflow on any screen.
What about password-protected or DRM-locked PDFs?
They cannot be converted. Unlocking documents is not something this tool does, and the DRM removal is not offered either.
How long does the conversion take?
Usually within a few minutes; a job like this can take up to about 11 minutes, since your file passes through two engines.
