What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PDF file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| pair.caseScanned | Not supported | Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so text extraction produces little or nothing — OCR is not offered yet, and we tell you when we detect one. |
| Text-based PDF (born digital) | Converts well | Paragraphs, tables and reading order are reconstructed into editable docx. |
| Scanned PDF (images of pages) | Not supported | No OCR yet — a scanned PDF converts to a document with little text. We tell you when we detect one. |
| Password-protected / encrypted PDF | Not supported | Encrypted files are refused. Remove the password first, then convert. |
| DRM-protected documents | Not supported | We do not strip DRM — by policy, not by accident. |
Why PDF and Word exist for different jobs
PDF and Word answer two different questions. Word (and its .docx format) is built for writing: every paragraph, list, table and style is a live object you can edit, and the software stores intent — "this line is a heading", "these columns are a table". PDF is built for printing and archiving: it fixes the exact position of every glyph and image on a page so the document looks identical everywhere, which is why contracts, papers and statements are distributed as PDFs.
Because PDF freezes positions instead of storing structure, a converter has to work backwards. It must cluster glyphs into lines, lines into paragraphs, decide what is a bullet versus a sentence, detect column boundaries, and rebuild tables that the PDF only describes as ink on a grid. That reverse engineering is the entire difficulty of PDF to Word conversion.
This is worth knowing before you pick a converter, because the quality spread between tools is enormous. The difference you notice in bad conversions — text that jumps around, one giant paragraph where a tidy table used to be, footnotes fused into body text — is almost always the layout inference step failing, not the text extraction itself.
How this converter rebuilds your document
LiteConvert routes your file to a dedicated PDF-to-DOCX engine that reconstructs logical structure rather than just dumping text. It reads the PDF's internal text objects, groups them by geometry and font information, then maps the result onto Word concepts: paragraphs with spacing, real tables with rows and cells, and headings inferred from font size patterns.
Fonts and images are carried over where the PDF embeds them. If a PDF uses a non-standard encoding for its fonts, the engine falls back to Unicode mapping tables; in rare cases with exotic embedded fonts, characters can come out slightly different — if that happens, the conversion still completes and the mismatch is visible rather than silent.
Conversion runs on our conversion cluster rather than in your browser, so even large documents convert without warming up your laptop. A typical 20-page business PDF finishes in seconds; a 500-page manual can take longer, and you will see progress while it works.
What limits the result — honestly
The single biggest factor is whether your PDF has a text layer. A PDF produced from Word, Excel, LaTeX or a web page contains machine-readable text and converts well. A PDF produced by a scanner is just photographs of paper stitched together; there is no text to extract until optical character recognition (OCR) runs. LiteConvert does not offer OCR yet, and we say so up front — our detection step tells you when your file looks scanned instead of letting you convert and download an empty document.
Encrypted PDFs are a second hard limit. If a file opens only with a password, we refuse the conversion rather than pretend to try. The same applies to DRM-protected ebooks and licensed documents: stripping those protections is against our policy regardless of technical feasibility.
Finally, extreme layouts — multi-column academic papers with marginalia, forms with overlapping field boxes, hand-drawn annotations — convert with imperfections. The text will be complete, but you may need to fix some paragraph breaks. For most business documents, the result opens in Word or Google Docs ready to edit.
Privacy: what happens to your file
Your PDF is uploaded over HTTPS, processed by the conversion engine, and the resulting .docx is stored just long enough for you to download it. Both the original file and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours — that is a system setting, not a discretionary promise.
Signing in is optional, so there is nothing you must log into, nothing to profile and nothing to sell. We do not run third-party ad networks on this site. If you need the details, they are on the privacy page in plain language.

Frequently asked
Is PDF to Word conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will the converted Word file look exactly like the PDF?
Close for text-based PDFs: text, tables and reading order are preserved, but exotic fonts or complex multi-column layouts may need small manual fixes.
Can it convert scanned PDFs?
Not yet. Scanned pages are images, and we do not offer OCR yet — the detector will tell you when your PDF looks scanned so you don't waste a conversion.
What about password-protected PDFs?
Encrypted files are refused. Remove the password in your PDF reader first (usually File → Save As without security), then convert.
Is there a page limit or file size limit?
The only limit is 200 MB per file. There is no page cap and no daily conversion quota during beta.
Can I convert Word back to PDF here?
Yes — use the Word to PDF tool. The two directions are separate conversions tuned for their own formats.
