What converts well
| Case | Verdict | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PNG file | Converts well | Handled by a dedicated conversion engine. |
| UI screenshots and flat graphics | Converts well | Lossless WebP keeps every pixel identical at a smaller size. |
| Images with transparency | Converts well | Alpha channel survives the conversion untouched. |
| Photos saved as PNG | Converts well | Lossy WebP shrinks them dramatically with no visible change. |
| Very old browsers (IE11) | Not supported | WebP is universal in modern browsers but not in legacy ones. |
PNG's trade and WebP's fix
PNG is lossless: every pixel is preserved exactly, which is why it became the format for screenshots, logos, icons and anything with sharp edges or transparency. The price is size — lossless compression of photographic content is remarkably inefficient, and a screenshot-heavy page can weigh megabytes for no visible benefit.
WebP attacks exactly that weakness. Developed at Google and now supported by every modern browser, WebP offers both lossless mode (typically 25–35% smaller than PNG at identical pixels) and lossy mode (often 3–5× smaller than PNG with no visible difference). It also keeps alpha transparency in both modes, which was historically the reason people stayed on PNG.
How the conversion decides
The converter analyses your image before encoding: graphics-like content with flat areas and exact edges is written as lossless WebP so not a pixel changes, while photographic content is encoded in high-quality lossy WebP where the size win is enormous and the difference invisible. Transparency is preserved in either path.
In practice this means website assets stop being the bottleneck: a 2 MB UI screenshot typically lands under 600 KB lossless, and camera photos saved as PNG (a wasteful habit) shrink by multiples. Colors stay in their original profile — no accidental saturation shifts that naive converters introduce.
Conversion takes a second or two; the upload is the slow part.
When PNG should stay PNG
Honesty about limits: if your audience includes ancient corporate browsers (IE11 is still real in some enterprises), WebP images will not render there and a PNG fallback is required. For public websites that concern is mostly historical, but internal tools sometimes still care.
Also consider your pipeline: some desktop applications and print workflows want PNG or TIFF sources. WebP is a delivery format for the web, not an archival master. Convert a copy for shipping; keep the master where it is.
Deletion and privacy
Both files — original PNG and converted WebP — are deleted automatically within 24 hours. Uploads ride over HTTPS, processing happens in memory, and the site runs no third-party ad networks. Images you convert here are not training data, not marketing material, not retained.

Frequently asked
Is PNG to WebP conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will WebP look identical to my PNG?
Yes for graphics: lossless WebP is pixel-identical. Photos get high-quality lossy encoding with no visible change.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes — the alpha channel carries through untouched.
How much smaller is WebP really?
Typically 25–35% smaller lossless, and several times smaller for photos saved as PNG.
Do all browsers support WebP?
All modern ones do. IE11 and similarly ancient browsers do not.
