The web's favorite video, taken off the web
WebM is the container the web built for itself: open, royalty-free, and the native video of browser projects, free stock-footage sites, screen recorders and countless download portals. If you have ever saved a clip from the web, decent odds it arrived as a WebM — VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio inside. The name sounds niche until you count the sources: one download button on a stock site, one recording session, one saved demo, and the format is already in your working folder.
Play it in a browser and everything works. Take it almost anywhere else and the story changes: the iPhone's player, many TV apps, most video editors and plenty of upload forms still prefer MP4. Converting WebM to MP4 moves your clip from "the web accepts it" to "everything accepts it" — which is usually the whole point of having saved it.
The format is not going away, either. HTML5 video plays WebM natively in every major browser, open-source projects ship their demo clips in it, and a growing set of recorder tools choose it as their default precisely because it is unencumbered. In other words: the supply of stray WebM files keeps growing, and so does the need to make them portable.
From VP8/VP9/AV1 to H.264
The conversion transcodes your video to H.264 with AAC audio — the codec pair the entire device ecosystem agrees on. This is a genuine re-encode rather than a repackaging: WebM's codecs are not what MP4 players expect, so the frames are decoded and re-encoded at high quality. Resolution and frame rate follow the source; a 1080p WebM comes out a 1080p MP4, ready for wherever an MP4 goes.
Because VP9 compresses more efficiently than H.264, the MP4 may end up somewhat larger than the WebM — the price of playing everywhere. Quality stays faithful to the source either way, and there is no watermark and no forced resolution cap along the way.
What "high quality" means in practice: the encoder keeps enough bitrate that fine detail — text in screen recordings, faces in talking-head clips, gradients in animation — survives the trip without smearing. Screen recordings, the most common WebM cargo, fare especially well because flat colors and sharp edges re-encode almost losslessly at the source resolution. Demos and stock clips behave the same way; only already-compressed, low-bitrate sources have nothing left to give.
Where the MP4 goes afterwards
Editors come first: Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve and every mobile editor handle an H.264 MP4 natively, while WebM support ranges from grudging to absent. Devices follow: iPhones, iPads, Android phones, smart TVs, game consoles. Platforms close the list: social networks and messaging apps that reject WebM uploads accept the MP4 without comment. One high-quality conversion lets the same clip travel to all of them, instead of a different export for each destination.
Most conversions finish within a few minutes; larger files can take up to about 15 minutes at worst, with progress shown while the engine works. The limit is 200 MB per file — ample for stock clips, demos and screen recordings alike. The standard rule holds here too: DRM-protected files are refused, while anything you have the right to convert is welcome.
Privacy and deletion
Downloads deserve the same discretion as any other file: HTTPS transport, processing on the conversion cluster, and both the WebM and the finished MP4 deleted automatically within 24 hours. An account is optional and useful only if you want history across devices; there is no watermark, no email step, and no fine print anywhere in the flow.

Frequently asked
Is WebM to MP4 conversion really free?
Yes. During the beta everything on LiteConvert is free within daily per-IP quotas (failures refunded). No account required, no card, no watermark on the output.
Are my files safe?
Your files travel over HTTPS, are converted, and both the original and the result are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never sell or share uploaded files, and there are no third-party ad networks on this site.
How long does a conversion take?
Most files finish in seconds. Larger files take longer, and you will see progress while the conversion runs.
Will the MP4 be larger than the WebM?
Often yes, a little — VP9 compresses more efficiently than H.264. The trade buys playback on editors, TVs and iPhones.
Will quality drop during the conversion?
The re-encode runs at high quality, and resolution and frame rate follow your source. For normal viewing the result looks like the original.
Which WebM codecs can be converted?
VP8, VP9 and AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio — the standard WebM combinations — all convert to H.264/AAC.
How long does a WebM to MP4 conversion take?
Usually a few minutes. Larger files can take up to about 15 minutes at worst, and progress is shown while the engine works.
How big can my WebM file be?
Up to 200 MB per file — plenty for a stock clip or a screen recording.
